Nordstrom believed that genuine inclusiveness must be reflected in all aspects of the company's business, including advertisements. The company believed that reaching out to diverse communities started with advertising. Since 1991, Nordstrom had featured models with disabilities in its advertisements and catalogs. In spite of Nordstrom's diversity initiatives and the honors it received from minority and disability rights organizations, the company did not escape criticism. Over the years, Nordstrom became involved in a few controversies regarding discrimination against employees on grounds of disability.
